CBS Board of Directors Elections 2025 and CBS2027 Update

Dear CBS Member,

I have a two important news items to communicate:

1. CBS Board Member Elections: It is now time to cast your votes for open positions on the CBS Board of Directors. There are three (3) open positions of Senior Board Member (2025-2027) and one (1) open position of Student Board Member (2025-2026). The deadline for voting is Friday, June 20th at 11:59pm Eastern time.

We have a great list of candidates based on nominations received at or before the Annual General Meeting. I strongly encourage each of you to vote.

2. CBS2027 Update: We received two proposals for CBS 2027 at the AGM from Quebec City and Winnipeg. Upon discussions between the two groups who presented a proposal, it was agreed that CBS2027 will be held in Quebec City. Please find the CBS2027 proposal from the Quebec City team below. Thank you very much to the proposing teams and I look forward to what I know will be an excellent CBS meeting in 2027!

CBS Québec 2027 – Proposal to Host the Annual Conference

Université Laval, the CR-CHU de Québec – Université Laval, and the biomaterials research community of Québec City and the entire Eastern Québec region are proud to submit Québec City’s candidacy to host the CBS annual conference in May 2027. With over 25 professors and researchers, along with their teams, actively working in biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering, Université Laval and its affiliated centers have been key contributors to Canadian research advancements in these fields for several decades. Home to North America’s largest French-speaking university hospital center (CR-CHUQ-UL), Québec City regularly hosts major conferences in the biomedical and health technology sectors.

For CBS-2027, the organizing committee aims to maintain the successful conference format that has defined CBS over the years. Québec City offers easy accessibility, with direct flights from Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa, and Vancouver, as well as Via Rail connections (5–6 departures per day from Montreal, 1–2 per day from Halifax). The event will be held over three days at the Desjardins Pavilion on Université Laval’s campus, which features two major auditoriums (accommodating 300 and 500 participants, respectively) and several smaller rooms designed for 30–100 attendees. A large cafeteria with diverse menu options is located on the ground floor, ensuring accessible catering services. Additionally, student residences are situated just meters away from Desjardins Pavilion, which is conveniently located opposite the main bus stop for the Québec City transit system.

Each day of the conference will open with a plenary lecture, followed by three parallel sessions. Special emphasis will be placed on biomaterials applications in orthopedics, cardiovascular health, dentistry, medical physics and oncology, as well as ophthalmology, reflecting the key research areas in Québec City and Eastern Québec. Beginning in 2025, the organizing committee will work closely with the CBS leadership team to strengthen ties with medical training programs, ensuring deeper academic integration with the conference. One of the key objectives of CBS Québec 2027 is to establish the conference as a reference point in medical residency training, offering credit-bearing sessions for young physicians.

In 2025, Québec City's biomedical research network expanded with the establishment of a major radioisotope production center for medical imaging and therapy: the Québec cyclotron. Located within the newly built Cancer Research Center (CRC) at CR-CHUQ-UL, constructed between 2019 and 2024, this state-of-the-art facilityrepresents a significant advancement in the field of radiopharmaceutical science. An exclusive tour of this cutting-edge infrastructure will be offered to CBS participants, providing them with the opportunity to explore the latest technologies in medical imaging and radiotherapy.

The conference’s social program will include a guided visit to the Musée des Augustines, North America’s oldest hospital (founded in 1639), as well as a gala event at the Hôtel des Premières Nations, located in the Wendat Indigenous community of Wendake.

CBS Québec 2027 – Proposition pour l’Accueil de la Conférence Annuelle

L’Université Laval, le CR-CHU de Québec – Université Laval et la communauté de recherche en biomatériaux de la ville de Québec et de tout l’Est du Québec proposent la candidature de la Ville de Québec pour accueillir la conférence annuelle de CBS en mai 2027. Avec plus de 25 professeurs et chercheurs, ainsi que leurs équipes respectives, actifs dans les domaines des biomatériaux, de la médecine régénératrice et de la régénération tissulaire, le réseau de l’Université Laval et de ses centres affiliés constitue, depuis plusieurs décennies, un pôle majeur de la recherche canadienne dans ces domaines. Accueillant le plus grand centre universitaire hospitalier francophone d’Amérique du Nord (CR-CHUQ-UL), la Ville de Québec est un lieu privilégié pour les congrès du secteur biomédical et des technologies de la santé.

Le comité d’organisation de CBS-2027 vise à maintenir le format de conférence éprouvé qui a fait le succès de CBS au fil des années. Québec offre une bonne accessibilité, avec des vols directs depuis Montréal, Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa et Vancouver, ainsi que des liaisons par train Via Rail (5 à 6 départs par jour depuis Montréal et 1 à 2 depuis Halifax). L’événement se déroulera sur trois jours au Pavillon Desjardins du campus de l’Université Laval, qui dispose de deux grands auditoriums (capacité de 300 et 500 participants, respectivement) ainsi que plusieurs salles plus petites, adaptées à des groupes de 30 à 100 personnes. Une grande cafétéria proposant divers menus est située au rez-de-chaussée, facilitant l’organisation des services de restauration. De plus, des résidences étudiantes se trouvent à quelques mètres du Pavillon Desjardins, qui est également situé face à l’arrêt principal du réseau de transport en commun de Québec.

Chaque journée du congrès débutera par une conférence plénière, suivie de trois sessions parallèles. Un accent particulier sera mis sur les applications des biomatériaux en orthopédie, santé cardiovasculaire, dentisterie, physique médicale et oncologie, ainsi qu’en ophtalmologie, reflétant les domaines de recherche clés dans la région de Québec et de l’Est du Québec. Dès 2025, le comité d’organisation collaborera étroitement avec l’équipe dirigeante de CBS afin de renforcer les liens avec les programmes de formation médicale et d’assurer une intégration académique approfondie à la conférence. L’un des principaux objectifs de CBS Québec 2027 est d’établir cette conférence comme un événement incontournable dans la formation des médecins résidents, offrant des sessions créditées pour les jeunes praticiens.

En 2025, le réseau de recherche biomédicale de la ville de Québec s’est enrichi avec l’ouverture d’un centre majeur dédié à la production de radioisotopes pour l’imagerie et la thérapie médicales : le cyclotron de Québec. Situé au cœur du nouveau Centre de Recherche sur le Cancer (CRC) du CR-CHUQ-UL, construit entre 2019 et 2024, cet équipement de pointe représente une avancée significative dans le domaine de la radiopharmaceutique. Une visite exclusive de cette infrastructure d’envergure sera proposée aux participants de CBS, leur permettant de découvrir les technologies les plus avancées en imagerie médicale et en radiothérapie.

Le volet social de la conférence comprendra une visite du musée des Augustines, le plus ancien hôpital d’Amérique du Nord (fondé en 1639), ainsi qu’un gala à l’hôtel des Premières Nations, situé dans la communauté autochtone Wendat de Wendake.
