A novel electroconductive nanocomposite for in vitro applications in neural tissue engineering

Supervisor: Dr. Fabio Variola

Neurodegenerative conditions and traumatic brain/spinal injuries are associated with neuron loss. Current research aims to develop biomaterials that functionally mimic neural tissues in order to predictably control key cellular events & address these disorders but faces challenges. I aim to investigate mechanisms of neural function by exploring how neurons interact with a newly developed nanocomposite vs. pristine collagen/Matrigel. This will elucidate the role of carbon nanodots in neuron responses & reveal our biomaterial's commercial/industrial value.

Keywords: Collagen, Matrigel, Carbon Nanodots, Electroconductive, Neurodegeneration, Neural Tissue Engineering

Techniques: Multi-electrode Array, Calcium Imaging, Immunofluorescence
